We Love NYC !

We can't wait to get together for Field Trip on Monday May 20, from 1-8pm in New York City. Check out our favorite things about any trip in the city, whether you're a local or traveling from afar !!

Suzy Ultman

"I love getting lost in the bustling crowds of New York. When I visit, I shed my small-town roots, and move to the groove of the city flock. Uptown, midtown, downtown, all-around fun!"

1349775a-ca9f-436e-bdf9-8a3a7a5d4e40.jpg

Sara Boccaccini Meadows

"I have this real love/hate relationship with NYC. When I love the city, I really love it and there's nowhere better. The best thing for me is the people—there's a place for everyone and class, gender, race is forgotten when you're all riding the dirty subway together. My favourite thing is the marches and rallies bringing everyone together."

25a9c777-6f4a-4fa9-aeec-10c3f5b764a6.jpg

Monika Forsberg

"The best thing about New York is that you instantly feel as if you’re in a movie. It doesn’t matter if you're walking through a rainy Central Park, buying a coffee in Brooklyn, getting on a train for Times Square or walking past a closed down Chelsea Hotel on the way to an art shop; it all feels as if you’re in a film. Magic."

Lillian Farag

"My favorite thing about living in New York is being able to eat anything I want at anytime! I love that there are so many food options to choose from. The hot dog cart or a quick pizza slice are some of the many foods that really make me feel like a New Yorker on the go. Not to mention all the different cultures that have come to settle in this melting pot of a city. For someone who loves to try new things, I feel lucky to be able to try authentic food without having to travel too far!"

Kimberly Ellen Hall/Nottene Studio

"I lived in NYC for 10 years in between other cities, and whenever I go back I love to notice all the little details. Seeing the littlest plants squeezing their way up towards the sunshine next to the giant skyscrapers always reminds me that there is room for everyone in this crazy city."

cfee7cdf-fc91-4842-ab4e-3b598093cdf8.jpg

Kelly Ventura

"For this small town Michigan girl, visiting New York City is a grand adventure every single time. I love walking through each of the neighborhoods and soaking up the energy, culture, color and inspiration that you can find in the most unexpected places."

0bbdc222-eaa1-44d2-ac33-105e412f1edf.jpg

Jessica Nielsen

"I have a vintage postcard of New York on the wall next to my bed. It has been there so long I didn’t notice it anymore. But now that I’ll be joining Field Trip the card makes me smile each morning in anticipation of the exciting trip I have ahead. I can’t wait to get to know New York better and enjoy it’s beauty, energy, chaos…"

Elizabeth Olwen

"For me, New York is all about the incredible energy. I get off the plane and feel like I’m instantly transported in the belly of a majestic beast. Yellow cabs, bright lights, big city, the eternal buzzing and bustling. Where people are making things happen, where ambition comes to find its path, where anything is possible. It’s the city of dreams, and I’m often in New York to present my creative work. So, to this forever-smalltown girl, now living in the relaxed city of Lisbon, it always truly feels like I’m walking on, and towards, a dream."

4a6f539f-0ce0-45f6-985e-272a96eaa19a.jpg

Carolyn Suzuki

"My all time favorite thing to do when I’m in NY is to put on music and wander around aimlessly all day. Music helps to heighten my other senses when I explore the city, I get to see more, smell more and and feel more. When NY is set against music, I become a New Yorker instantly,  I can move freely with it’s flow and feel that I belong there. I love you NY!"

1f33eb61-14d6-4826-b936-df03a9090c0a.jpg

Carrie Shryock

"Coming from my home in central Missouri, where I’m surrounded by prairie land and my nearest neighbor is about a half mile away, New York City is just about as opposite as you can get. That is precisely why I love visiting! When I’m in the city I can’t help but marvel at how it feels like being inside one giant living organism. From the underground subway system, to the boat traffic in the harbor, to the streets and avenues, it’s a place of constant motion. Everything works together. The city has it’s own heartbeat, and it just never stops."

Bikini sous la pluie

"When I was a kid, my parents used to drop me to school with their old Citroen car…and at that time, I have to say that I was quite ashamed of it ! But over the 10 past years, I’ve came to NYC quite often and to my great surprise, I have developed an obsession for vintage cars there. Each time I’m arriving in the city, it’s becoming a kind of hunting game. Luckily for me, I can find some amazing specimens at every corner in Brooklyn!"

Ampersand Design Studio

"Our favorite part of being in NYC is the change of scenery. We love the perspective we get from different surroundings, and in New York there is something exciting to see everywhere (even from our hotel window).  We often find new color palettes from buildings placed next to each other or from signs on the street. We are always overloaded with inspiration when we spend time there."

THINK SPRING !

Spring is nearly here and we are so happy to announce our next Field Trip show to you !

You may have heard that Surtex has now moved to February, but we will still be holding our show in May, during NYCxDesign week along with ICFF, Sight Unseen, Blueprint and a few other design shows. We have our fingers crossed you will be able to join us!

This year’s Field Trip will be held on Monday May 20, from 1-8pm in New York. This is our fourth annual show, and we are thrilled about the momentum that’s been building in the past few years. We have an incredible roster of talent again this year — some returning faces and some fresh artists that we are super excited about! Our joint virtual studio space is brimming over with creativity and colour from all the artists.

This year, we are so happy to introduce not one, not two but three new artists to our Field Trip family.

CARRIE SHRYOCK

Carrie grew up on a farm in central Missouri. There she spent her childhood picking bouquets of wildflowers and exploring the wide open prairie under a big cloud-filled sky. She currently lives in Columbia, Missouri but you can feel her strong connection to the vast landscapes and wilderness in her art and illustration. Today her favorite shade of blue is a bright vibrant blue sky on an early spring day. It's such a welcome sight after a long gray winter.

JESSICA NIELSEN

Our second artist is Dutch illustrator Jessica Nielsen who is currently residing in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Jessica has an eye for creating bright, bold, yet simple designs with a real graphic elegance. She is inspired by shapes and structures in nature and loves all shades of green.

LILLIAN FARAG

Lillian, a New York dweller, is a free spirited artist who creates expressive and colourful art with her very own twist of playfulness. “I would say I get a lot of inspiration from nature and colour play,” she says, adding that her current favourite colour is yellow.

Our core crew of returning artists include :

AMPERSAND DESIGN STUDIO

BIKINI SOUS LA PLUIE

CAROLYN SUZUKI

ELIZABETH OLWEN

KELLY VENTURA

KIMBERLY ELLEN HALL / NOTTENE STUDIO

MONIKA FORSBERG

SARA BOCCACCINI MEADOWS

SUZY ULTMAN

So don't forget how much fun we had last year, and start making your plans to visit us in NYC this May 20! In the meantime, be sure to follow along on our instagram or sign up for our newsletter to hear about future events!

Thanks again for following along with this artsy adventure of ours and see you SOON !

BIG WARM THANK YOU !

So much love, preparation and collaboration goes into planning Field Trip, that we can hardly contain ourselves when the day finally arrives. I think it’s safe to say we are still flying high from the great energy at the event this year. We are all so pleased with how our third show went, and we want to say a big warm thank you to all who came out!

After a rainy day last year, we were thrilled to have incredible weather this year. The loft where we hold the event was filled with sunlight, and really reflected the positivity around the event, and set the stage all of the amazing artwork put out by our artists.

This year we welcomed returning artists :

Field Trip is truly a collaboration — between the artists who plan it (who truly feel like family) but also with the other amazing people who help put on the show…

Our DJ Lauren, who always sets just the right mood with her impeccable taste in music

Plus our photographer Christine (who captured these amazing moments!), our friend and fellow artist Lindsey (who managed reception for us this year), and our incredible venue manager (he’s the best), David. Thank you to all !

We want to say a special thank you to Moo, who did all of our printing for us ! We were all fans of Moo before, but we love them even more now. They went out of their way to help us, printing giveaway notebooks with all of our designs.

As well as… our extra special giveaway. This year, we collaborated to create a deck of cards! The cards are a blend of all of our work, brought together in the Field Trip palette. We think it’s a keepsake and it’s a true visual representation of just how well we all worked together to put on the show.

Having face-to-face time with clients is so valuable for us, and we were so pleased to have such a great turn out to the show this year. We truly appreciate everyone making time to come visit the show and support our work. We’re all feeling so positive about future collaborations and were so happy to chat to so many good people.

If you attended the show, we’d love to hear what you think! We will be sending out a questionnaire soon to get your feedback, and you can also email us at hello@fieldtripshow.com. We want the show to be the best it can be so all feedback is welcome. In the meantime, be sure to follow along on our instagram or sign up for our newsletter to hear about future events!

Thanks again for following along with this artsy adventure of ours.

WHAT WE MAKE

Last month we showed you our studios. Now let us share some of the beautiful products that came out of them! We all make artwork in very different ways, with a variety of tools and inspirations. Here is a look into how that artwork comes to life on products. Field Trip is only a month away — we’re excited to show you what we’ve been working on!

Kelly Ventura (left/top) often works in watercolor, as she enjoys its transparent qualities and the ability to create rich compositions with layers of pigment. Her work is gestural, full of color and fresh. Suzy Ultman's (right/bottom) work has sophisticated charm with a side of playful, from an artist who lives in a land of mustached snails and apple houses.

6cb1c6e5-8a5e-40b5-9347-ce71e4a78f71.jpg

Jillian Phillips finds inspiration for her beautiful work on her yearly trips to Tokyo and Scandinavia, and has a trip to Iceland on her must-see list for 2018.

Ampersand Design Studio (left/top) is inspired by life in the Midwest, their kids’ imaginations and their own long-time friendship and they wouldn’t have it any other way. Carolyn Suzuki's work (right/bottom) work is described as feminine with a sense of humor and she hopes her work conveys a sense of whimsy while putting a smile on the face of those who engage with her designs.

5042936d-3a64-493f-8535-a65e6221dd37.jpg

Elizabeth Olwen is inspired by the world around her—her own city, her cherished adventures abroad, and all forests, gardens and living creatures in between.

Victoria Johnson (left/top) experiments with a wide variety of techniques and materials. The process is organic and often determines the outcome. She chooses subject matter that facilitates her explorations into texture, pattern and beautiful, feminine colour. Nottene Studio (right/bottom) is a print and pattern studio based in an old row home in Philadelphia and it's pronounced [nuh-ten-uh], which is based on the Norwegian word for nuts (nøttene).

Monika Forsberg (left/top) studied art & filmmaking at the Royal College of Art and her work is a quirky explosion of colour and humour in a technicolor world. Using pen, paper and paint, she creates a fusion of everyday observation and fantasy. Caroline from Bikini Sous La Pluie (right/bottom) is a French textile designer who is currently living in New York for a few months. She has a predilection for conversational prints, drawing quirky cats and dogs, and playing with colors (pink and blue is her favorite combination).

8ad9d8e0-aa68-49ff-921c-cad1b8ba57e7.jpg

Sara Boccaccini Meadows takes inspiration from nature and the tiny details in her everyday surroundings to create unique and quirky print illustrations.

WHERE AND HOW WE CREATE

One of our key aims with Field Trip is to make sure the artists represent an inspiring balance of styles. We create our artwork in very different environments from studios all over the world and, as you can see, we have a wide variety of interesting approaches. We hope you enjoy this peek into our creative lives!

Monika (left/top) is Swedish but lives in London, where she works from her apartment on a small scale, assembling her imaginative collages out of drawn bits or paintings. Kelly (right/bottom) creates gestural, watercolour florals and abstracts from a small and charming Michigan town. She often works at a very large scale to keep the movement of her brushstrokes fluid and free.

13afaee2-7a2d-443f-b89c-20d43629539e.jpg

Carrie and Morgan from Ampersand Design Studio work closely together in their light-filled studio in Kansas City to create their bold, artful, fun, and colour-filled style. Their favourite techniques include pen and ink, paint and cut paper.

Suzy (left/top) collects inspiration, from vintage ephemera to unique textiles and notions, perfectly balancing sophistication and whimsy from her studio in Ohio. Jillian (right/bottom) sketches and paints from her home studio in Dorset, using different techniques to create her signature style, always accompanied by her friendly Dachsund, Bertie.

ed427a15-fd32-49f8-95ca-94f5ed4493fe.jpg

Carolyn works from her home in LA and often finds herself painting at this gorgeous dining table, working on her computer at her corner desk in the living room, or sitting on the couch with her pup, Sugar, while drawing in her sketchbook.

f4e3508b-601d-40e3-a998-c4b65d4c032c.jpg

Nottene Studio is a husband and wife team working from their studio in Philadelphia. They like to push the boundaries of what is possible in screen printing and drawing to see how much of the details and pleasant imperfections can be brought out during the process.

4db9172d-ca61-470d-b9da-bb9c31580ec3.jpg

Sara works from her Brownstone apartment in Brooklyn, documenting details of her life in stunning sketchbooks that have become a huge part of her work. She often looks back through them to inspire a new project.

Elizabeth (left/top) is Canadian, working in Lisbon. She begins by drawing on paper then redraws her motifs on her iPad Pro, lovingly assembling each element into a well-composed pattern with a focus on balance and delicious colour. Victoria (right/bottom) is English, working from her home studio in Rome. She experiments with a range of materials and techniques, rarely sketching or planning but letting her designs grow organically.

bc4ec72c-de98-44a1-b04a-ca322e40bb0c.jpg

Caroline is French but has recently moved to New York for a while. Hand-drawing is always her first step, before organising and perfecting digitally, followed by experimenting with unexpected colour palettes (her favourite part!).

HUGE SUCCESS FOR OUR 2nd FIELD TRIP EVENT

We held our second Field Trip show in New York on May 22nd, with an absolute dream team of artists, and we were joined by an incredible guest list for what turned out to be another amazing show.

Field Trip 052217-205.jpg

Though it was a rainy day outside, we were so pleased that so many clients came out to see us. There were cocktails and bubbly, beautiful charcuterie, our DJ Lauren set the perfect vibe, and this year we added a little extra magic with a charming little candy bar.

It was an amazing day and we’re so grateful to all the friends and suppliers who helped us put it all together.

These gorgeous photos taken by Christine Han (http://christinehanphotography.com) really capture the fun and inspiring vibe of the show.

And we will be back ! If you’d like to hear more about our event as we prepare for our event next May, sign up for our newsletter or follow us on Instagram. And if you’re an art director or potential client looking to attend next year, please request an invite on our website.

We hope to see you next year!

ANOTHER YEAR, ANOTHER FIELD TRIP

We’re thrilled to announce Field Trip is coming back to New York on Monday, May 22, 2017.

It will be held in the same beautiful, light-filled loft in the garment district where the show took place last year. The event coincides with Surtex/NSS/ICFF so clients can easily take a trip around the corner to join us for the opportunity to spend time in a casual, fun environment, viewing lovely artwork while enjoying cocktails, appetizers, and great music!

A fresh alternative to a trade show, our event will be intimate, focusing on quality over quantity — connecting great artists with great clients, and even introducing clients to each other — you never know where sparks will fly.

If you’d like to attend this year’s event, please get in touch via the request an invite page.

Hope to see you there!

PEERSPACE VIDEO OF THE EVENT

FIRST FIELD TRIP EVENT

After months of preparation, we hosted our first Field Trip Event on May 16, 2016 in New York, in a big beautiful loft in the garment district. It's always difficult to gauge how something new will be received but we were all delighted by the response. So many of our best clients joined us for cocktails, appetizers and the opportunity to spend time in a light-filled, relaxing environment, viewing lovely artwork.

We think you can see from the pictures that it was a hugely enjoyable success and worth all the effort. If you came to the show we hope you had a wonderful time. We were so happy to see so many friendly faces and show off our most recent work. It really was an absolute pleasure. Thank you.

Interested in hearing a bit more about what the event is all about? Check out this great interview we did on Pattern Observer !

Stay tuned for news about upcoming Field Trip events by signing up for our newsletter.

Until then, here are some of the gorgeous photos from the event. (The photos are taken by Malcolm Brown (with the exception of a few).  We think he did an amazing job and hope you enjoy looking at them ! )
